Breed problems can be both inherited or diseases and disorders seen
frequently in a breed and mode of inheritance unknown. Both are listed.
Breed Problems
Coloboma: an abnormal development of the eye, usually seen in collies,
which can lead to blindness
Corneal leukomas: an abnormal accumulation of a white material in or
on the cornea
Franconi Syndrome - a kidney disease where sugar spills into the urine
Hemolytic anemia: anemia caused by the destruction of the red blood
cells by an autoimmune process.
Hypothyroidism: a common endocrine disease where the body produces an
abnormally low amount of thyroid hormones
Inguinal hernia: a break in the muscular layer of the body wall
occurring at the inguinal canal (where the back leg meets the body).
Intestinal malabsorption: a disease where the intestinal tract does
not absorb nutrients properly. Also known as protein- losing enteropathy as a
consequence of inflamatory bowel disease. In Irish setters there is also a
wheat-sensitive enteropathy.
Persistent pupillary membrane: a developmental abnormality where the
membrane forming the iris does not form properly
Progressive retinal atrophy: a disease where the retina slowly
deteriorates, producing night blindness
Pyruvate kinase deficiency: a deficiency of a specific red blood cell
enzyme. Most commonly seen in basenjis; also in beagles and Cairn terriers.
Renal tubular dysfunction: a condition where the tubules of the
kidneys (the filtering structures) do not function properly. (See #124b.) In
basenjis, glycosuria develops and is called Fanconi syndrome.
Retinal dysplasia: a condition where the retina is malformed.
Umbilical hernia: a break in the abdominal muscle wall at the point
where the umbilical cord enters the body.
